Written in graphite below plate: (BL) "18/20"; (BR) "Eduardo Fausti". Signed in plate with maker's mark (E encircled) at BL; maker's mark embossed in margin at BL corner by edition number.

This is a mezzotint after Albrecht Durer's drawing, "Kopfstudie eines Afrikaners" (1508). The print shows a black man with a beard and moustache in three-quarter profile wearing a shirt under a jacket. The print is a mirror image of the drawing's original composition. The year 1508 and Durer's mark (A over D) appear along the top of the image, and Fausti's mark (E encircled) and 2006 appear along the bottom of the image.

"Albrecht Durer, creator of 'Head of a Black Man,' wrote 'Life in nature makes us recognize the truth of these things, so look at it diligently, follow it, for verily art is embedded in nature; whoever can draw her out has her.' The artist looked for nature in everything he did including his portraits-his translations of life conveyed true naturalism. For some time now, this has been a source of inspiration in my work." / Eduardo Fausti
