In 1964, civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer helped found the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, challenging the all-white delegation to the Democratic National Convention. Her speech at the convention drew attention to racism in voter registration. She later ran unsuccessfully for Congress. Hamer helped form the National Women's Political Caucus in 1971. [LMC]
