Payson Canyon
Five (5) butterflies in a Riker Mount which is a thin, glass-topped, cotton-filled exhibition case. They are lined up except for the two with folded wings that are displayed side by side. They have a dark orange background with the veins showing up in black. The wings show thinker darker areas throughout. The underside is a yellow with dark and silver iridescent spots. They range in size from 1 1/2 to 1 5/8 x 2 1/4. The following description goes from top to bottom and left to right. Verso identifies the first, second, and fourth as a female and the third and fifth as a male. The third and fourth butterflies have folded wings and are facing toward the center of the mount. VERSO: A dark pink stamp that has a box with the following information inside: "Collection of Clay Ward (obstructed by a hook used to hang the mount) Inglewood-California NAME [line] on DATE [line] LOCATION [line]" In black handwritten ink on the NAME line: "Argynnis platina" In black handwritten ink on the DATE line: "June 22, 1934" In black handwritten ink on the LOCATION line: Payson Canyon Utah County UTAH" In black handwritten ink beneath the box is : "Skinner's Fritillary". Male and Female symbols are stamped below in pink that correspond to the butterflies on recto.
