The artist made one single cut in this stone with a saw before setting it in the daiza (setting). Some suiseki artists will allow
for one cut to enhance the proportions and balance of the stone, which will then be hidden in the setting. Others
prefer not to make any cuts. Some people think of each stone as having a spirit, and believe that cutting the stone
may damage it.
