TOM. (Oakes) Bernard von Eichman. 1989.

APPROXIMATE DATE: 1928 ARTIST BIRTH: 1899; ARTIST DEATH: 1970 Exhibition Label: "Scene in Oakland", Oakland Museum of California March 9 - August 25, 2002 58. Bernard von Eichman (1899-1970) Bright Lights, 1928 Watercolor on paper Gift of the artist The vitality of Oakland's growing urban center in the late 1920s is expressed in Bernard von Eichman's watercolors from 1928. These works represent something of a stylistic departure from von Eichman's earlier more abstract paintings with the Society of Six artists. Exhibited at Oakland Art Gallery in September 1928, this was the artist's last exhibition before moving to New York City later that year. Unfortunately the acclaim for his works here was not to be repeated. His relocation to New York coincided with the onset of the Great Depression; thus his hopes for a continued successful art career were not to be.
