Noskowiak likely made this image on an outing with her companion and teacher, Edward Weston, to a friend's cactus garden in Monterey on November 8, 1932. Weston made a similar close-up of the same type of cactus that day, describing the outing in his Daybooks. Noskowiak's Cactus was probably one of the photographs she showed at the auspicious first exhibition of Group f.64 at the M. H. de Young Memorial Museum in San Francisco in 1932.
