Weston made two negatives of this scene. In the variant the lens was about half an inch to the left. The black-and-white dark cloth, which he had originally designed for desert use, has been pushed back; the tripod legs rearranged; the camera pointed at the rocks right below the tripod; and Brett positioned behind the camera, carefully adjusting the focus. The variant is more convincing. Brett seems less open and vulnerable than in this portrait but his face is also less visible [Amy Conger, "Edward Weston: Photographs," figure 1710].
