Lei shell. Native make, native shells "head rings." (J. Nason 9/93) "Not a Maori lei. These shell headrings--18.1968, 2111, 2138, 74.639.2837--are problematical. These here are attributed to Cook Islands, Tahiti, and Tuamotus--with similar attributions including Marquesas in other collections as well. They were apparently popular in all three areas at turn-of-the-century and first quarter of the 20th century. Perhaps they were also made in these areas as well, rather than simply traded. The shells seem to be general Indo-Pacific--but could be checked and identified. For women. The shells are generally threaded on string and wrapped around a padded cotton core. Best current attribution: S.E. Polynesia." (Roger Rose, 4/95)
