Writing the Chinese language was, and still is, considered an art. It is especially difficult to learn because the student has to learn a separate character for each word. Chinese scholars take pride not only in knowing many characters, but also in drawing them with skill and elegance. Calligrapnhy tools are treated with as much respect as writing itself.
