Winchester rifle, 11 cartridges. Used by John W. Searles. Cartridge located 3/78 and rendered safe by Naval Air Station experts. (B.Hopp 1982) 45-60 caliber repeating riflr. Lever action. 48 1/2" overall. 28" octangonal barrel, rifled . Walnut stock. Buttstock checkered at wrist, measures 14". Checkered forearm measures 10 1/4". Tubular loading magazine located on underside of barral and retained by a small band. Iron crescent shaped buttplate. Blued finish. Folding leaf rear sight with "V" notch sliding sighting bar. Graduated from 100 to 1000 yards in 100 yard increments. Top of barrel marked WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS NEW HAVEN, CT./KING"S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 19, 1866.OCTOBER 16,1860." Serial number "4908"on bottom of frame, falls within the Early Second Model 1876 range. See Index, Part Eight. (Barry Hopp, 1982) Belonged to John. W Searles who came to California via Cape Horn in 1849. Joined by his brother Dennis, they settled on 160 acres and staked two mining claims at Indian Creek in Shasta County. The brothers later moved to Los Angeles where they began a borax operation in 1873-1874. John Searles was born in Tribeshill, Montgomery County, New York on November 16, 1828 and died October 7, 1897.
