Gourd, 1851. From old homestead. Water dipper, homemade from a hollow gourd in the 19th century. Used to transfer water from bucket to kettle, cup or cooking pot. From the History Information Station: Like the water faucet today, the water dipper was in constant use in the pioneer household. Though large cities had piped water systems by the 1850's, most people still carried their water into and out of the house. Water was used for cooking, cleaning, bathing and drinking, and for all of these it needed to be transferred from the water bucket to another container.
