Food box. Material: wood; Shape: Rectangular; Color: Dark brown; Period or Date: Over 70 years old. - donor; Country: British Columbia; Culture: Haida. Description: Carved wooden food box, Northwest Coast Indian, Haida. Sides are curved in to bottom. Mr. Sawyer had them when married in his 20's. He died at 90. Measurements are approximate as it is in the case. "Very nicely carved bentwood bowl with undulating rim. Asymmetrical formline design carved on all four sides. Profile heads and body parts may represent raven. 19th century. Used as a food container. Made of red cedar, wood, grease saturated: Grease exudes from open end grains of wood."(Robin Wright, 7/91)
