3 hand drums, sides painted red, ends decorated with dragon motifs, used S.F. (19 C) (D. Peterson 2/79) China/Calif. Date: L. 1800's - E. 1900's. Drums; parflesche skin secured with large headed nail to round wood body covered with red painted paper; two iron rings on either side; each has painted phoenix (yin) on one side and dragon on other. a) red, green and blue phoenix with green cloud; green dragon with red flames; one ring missing but has chrome bracket alteration. b) reg. orange; blue green phoenix with white and red cloud, above which in character for moon; manufacturers black oval stamp partially reads CANTON CHINA; green dragon with red flames and white outline; square of red paper cut out. c) red, green phoenix with blue and orange wings; green and red clouds; manufacturer hand drawn red stamp at foot (can't read); green dragon with blue, red, green and orange clouds; both rings missing: Condition: good; paper cracking and peeling; wood seams seperating; c) one crack in wood. Dimensions: a) diam approx. 10" ht. 3 1/2" b) diam approx. 9 3/4" ht. 3 1/2" c) diam approx. 8 3/4" ht. 3 3/4". Remarks: could have been used in California for celebrations.
