crucifix. Description: solid brass on 3 corner stand (one piece) about 17" - 17C from Burgos, Spain. From the History Information Station Object: Brass crucifix made in Burgos, Spain, in the 17th century. History: A crucifix is a representation of Christ on the Cross. The use of the crucifix was uncommon before the 6th century, and the representation of Christ as suffering did not attain general usage until the 13th century. Prior to this time, the living, triumphant Christ was portrayed to emphasize his Resurrection and victory over sin and death. Crucifixes similar to this one were displayed in the California missions. Crucifixes might also have been found in the private chapels of the larger Californio ranchos, or as part of a small altar in a room of a more modest home. Museum Purchase
