box. Description: California Patch Box (for snuff) green cover, black base; drawing of "Gold seekers arrival in California" black ink on green surface, highly varnished. From the History Information Station: Box was made of wood and papier-mache. Americans were not the only businessmen to capitalize on the Gold Rush, as is portrayed in this imaginatively decorated snuff box from England. It depicts an image that became internationally known, showing a fanciful scene of lucky forty-niners arriving over the mountains and finding gold. The makers of this box have captitalized on the Gold Rush and the world-wide interest in CAlifornia and the men who went there in search of riches.
