paintings. Description: Three oil portraits of early Mexican Officials. a: Agustin de Iturbide, who became Emperor of Mexico in 1822. From the History Information Station: Object: Portrait of Augustn de Iturbide (1783-1824), oil on canvas, painted in Mexico, 19th century. History: Iturbide was a Mexican-born army officer who in 1821 was a leader in unifying Mexico and in achieving its independence from Spain. On May 19, 1822, Iturbide crowned himself Augustn I, emperor of Mexico and Alta California. Iturbide's tyrannical behavior and his inability to bring order and stability to Mexico led to opposition and his forced abdication in March 1823. After exile in Italy he returned to Mexico, unaware that he was under a death sentence. He was captured and executed. Although historians have cast him in the role of self-serving military adventurer, for many Iturbide has remained the great hero of Mexican independence. Museum Purchase
