Sign. Description: "Baggage Room" From the History Information Station: Object: Black and white metal sign, "Baggage Room." History: The baggage room is a distinctive aspect of the American railraod station. When you traveled, you took your luggage to the baggage room and left it until the train arrived. The baggage handler gave you a ticket for each piece. Large, heavy items -- such as steamer trunks and caskets -- were loaded on the trains by porters, and traveled in a separate baggage car from the pas- sengers. At the other end of your journey, you presented your tickets at the baggage room in that station to retrieve the items luggage.
