Description: wooden bookcase -- 2 shelves, top cabinet that locks; scalloped wood design History: Mexican From the History Information Station: Object: Wooden bookcase made in the 18th century in Mexico. It is one example of the many items imported into Alta California, either in caravans that traveled overland, or in ships that sailed up the coast from Baja California. History: This bookcase is typical of the type of furniture made in Alta California. As iron nails were in short supply, they were used sparingly in furniture construction of this period. The components of this bookcase are joined by wooden pegs and carefully carved mortise-and-tenon joints. Museum Purchase
