Cross. Description: iron. Wrought and chiseled iron with fretwork. The cross is flat and it is attached to a brass globe that has sleeve fitted for a pole. At the base of the cross there is a double headed eagle design, the emblem of the Hapsburgs. This motiv was very recurrant in the "metallic lace" designs of Mexico's eighteenth century ironwork. Ironwork was produced in Oaxaca, and also in Queretaro, Zacatecas, Morelia and Guadalajara from the seventeenth century, but reached its peak on the eighteenth century. The cross could have been used for processions. S. Macarron 3/27/07. (The Grandeur of Viceregal Mexico, Museo Franz Mayer, Mexico)
