This "Gloria wheel" was used in a Mexican mission in the 19th century. History: Wheels of Sacring bells, also called Gloria wheels, were popular in Spain and were brought to California for use in the missions. The Sacring bell was rung at Mass to indicated key points in the liturgy. The use of these bells dates from the 12th century when their purpose was to inform the congregation of what part of the Mass was taking place, important when services were in Latin, not commonly understood by the congregation. The use of Sacring bells was also common in large churches, where the congregation was often seated quite a distance from the priest celebrating Mass. Though they are no longer a necessity, the use of Sacring bells is a tradition that persists in many parishes today. Museum Purchase
