Object: Three wood and brass parallel rulers used in Europe in the 18th or 19th century for plotting a ship's course on a chart or map.
History: These rulers are designed for drawing parallel lines. They are made of straight rulers connected by jointed cross-pieces so that they are always parallel, at whatever distance they are set.
