Doll. Description: Terra cotta (clay) "Frozen Charlotte" doll. From the History Information Station: History: Stiff little dolls like this were mass-produced and sold in dry goods stores, or given as gifts to children by salesmen doing business with their mothers and fathers.** Today they are called "Frozen Charlottes," after a character in a folksong who was too vain to wear a heavy coat during a cold winter, and froze to death one night. However, no one is sure if 19th century children called them "Frozen Carlottes," or if the name is a recent invention. ** This part taken from history of number H70.12.51. GMW 1/16/97
