Container/lid. Description: Wooden flour firkin with cover. Red with gray. a: Box. b: Lid. From the History Information Station: Bread, biscuits, pies, cakes, crackers and soups thickened with flour formed a large part of the pioneer family's diet. On the prairie frontier farmers grew their own grain and made their own flour. But there were no wheat fields in California in 1850 so pioneers purchased flour in bulk at the general store, along with sugar and salt, and perhaps barley, oats and cornmeal as well. Boxes like this were also handy as kitchen stools.
