View of the grounds from the porch on the grounds of Our Lady of Lourdes College, (College of the Holy Names), Webster and 20th Street, Oakland, (Now the site of Kaiser Center) Convent. (6/2002, G. Weininger) from Beth Bagwell, Oakland: The Story of a City, 1982, p.115ff: College of the Holy Names, originally Convent of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, was established in 1868 along the northern shore of Lake Merritt as a school for young girls. In 1880 it was also chartered as a college but initially trained only those young women who would enter the order; in 1917 it was opened as a junior college to girls of other backgrounds and in 1925 expanded to become a senior college. Its move to the Oakland hills in 1957 was financed by sale of the original property to Kaiser Industries.
