Union Iron Works launching of ship "War Knight", April 6, 1917 (D. Cooper, 2/99) I wonder if this is Union Iron Works or Union Construction Co. of Alameda? Union Iron Works was established in Oakland in 1901 but I don't think they built ships. (D. Cooper, 9/2002, from Pacific Gateway, An Illustrated History of the Port of Oakland, by Woodruff Minor) Union Construction Co. occupied a large parcel of city-owned tideland and the end of the 14th St. trestle, near City Wharf No.3. Union's shipyard constructed in 1918-19, went into production as the war ended. Subleased in the early 1920s to the Pacific Coast Engineering Company, the property everntually became part of the Oakland Army Base.
