Basket. Description: Meal-Sifting Basket. Hupa From the History Information Station: "Object: Shaker basket, made by twining. The materials used are split pine root, with bear grass for the overlay design. The basket was collected among the Hupa, and dates to the late 19th or early 20th century. History: This basket was used during the processing of acorn kernels into flour. The flour was placed in this basket and shaken to separate the coarse particles from the fine flour. The coarse particles were returned to the mortar and pounded with the pestle until they were of the correct consistency."
