Coupon Book. Description: Kahns Budget Account Coupon Book (#2690). Customer's name: Mrs. J. O. Cunha, 1936-38. From the History Information Station: Object: Payment book for Kahn's department store in downtown Oakland. History: This was used to purchase a new washing machine, in December, 1936. During the Depression, any sort of household appliance was a luxurious expense. The machine cost $165, with a $19.50 financing fee, so the total cost was $184.50. This was paid off over two years, with monthly payments of $7.70, all of which are recorded in this book. $184 may not seem like a lot today, but it was between one and two months salary for most people in 1937.
