Chair. Description: Wooden Chair -c. 1946, Molded plywood, Designed by Charles Eames, MFG. By Herman Miller. From the History Information Station: Object: Molded plywood chair called the "potato chip" chair. Designed by Charles Eames and made in the mid-1940s by Herman Miller Co., a leading producer of Modern-style furniture. History: Charles Eames is considered one of the most important 20th century Modern designers. This chair is a classic example of Modern "organic" design. Organic forms were machine-made, but they were designed to fit the human body, to make the machine the servant of human comfort. Eames and his wife, Ray Kaiser Eames, spent years working in their Los Angeles apartment perfecting a technique for bending plywood into undulating, body-welcoming shapes.
