American Red Cross Volunteer Pin, WWII, red, white and blue enamel on metal. History: belonged to donor's mother.

The American Red Cross was founded in 1881 by Clara Barton and supporters. Barton had been inspired by the Swiss red cross movement which she encountered after the Civil War. She also worked for the ratification of the Geneva Convention protecting the war-injured in 1882.
