The Kaiser Building, designed by Welton Beckett, was completed in 1959. The international headquarter of the Kaiser Industries is an example of the use of the glass curtain wall popular in the 1950s. The lakefront property previously belonged to the College of the Holy Names which moved to the hills above 35th Avenue. Holy Names was established in Oakland in 1868 as the Convent of the Sacred Heart; the school located on the lake in 1872.
