Woman's dress. Description: Long sleeve dress of white sheeting material (cotton). Yoke at shoulder, slightly gathered at waist, sewn to gored skirt. Three snap closure at front neck. Decoration of green hand embroidered leaves over waist line, bottom of skirt area, on front pocket and at lower edge of sleeves. Dress appears to have been home made. Dimensions: 43-1/2" neck to hem. 34" waistline. 21" sleeve length 15" across shoulders. History: The dress dates from about 1926. It belonged to Mrs. Ross of Oakland (a African American woman) who was a friend of the donor. Mrs. Ross made the dress for herself when she was an adult. The dress came to the donor after the death of Mrs. Ross. Exhibited "Loving Hands at Home," Changing Gallery, May 5-Aug. 1, 1982. She sure liked to embroider, very artistic. She kind of invented her stitches, very creative. (Joan Severa, 3/4/1994)
