From the History Information Station: Object: Cap worn by San Francisco longshoremen. History: Charles Hackett was a charter member of the Longshoreman's Union, founded in 1937. He was a warehouseman on the San Francisco waterfront for more than 20 years. Unions and trades have frequently taken easily identifiable modes of dress as "labels." Mr. Hackett and other longshoremen adopted caps like this as their special style. Mr. Hackett wore this cap in union parades and to meetings for many years. Gift of Charles A. Hackett
