Description: white duck men's cap, metal snap on front bill; Condition: soiled & yellow Dimensions: Size 7 History: Worn by Mr. Hackett, charter member of Warehouse union, ILWU, local 6; worn from 1937 and on, primarily in parades and union activities. From the History Information Station: Object: Cap worn by San Francisco longshoremen. History: Charles Hackett was a charter member of the Longshoreman's Union, founded in 1937. He was a warehouseman on the San Francisco waterfront for more than 20 years. Unions and trades have frequently taken easily identifiable modes of dress as "labels." Mr. Hackett and other longshoremen adopted caps like this as their special style. Mr. Hackett wore this cap in union parades and to meetings for many years. Gift of Charles A. Hackett
