Gift of Mr. George H. Horton

Probably made in one of the many glass foundries that abounded in Oakland in the late 19th and early 20th century which took advantage of the abundant supply of sand found in the played out coal mines of the Mt. Diablo area, these are early machine made types. They were distributed all over the west. They were acquired by the donor's father Alvin as a child for use in marble games. He was born in San Francisco in 1879. George H. Horton, the donor was born in 1919 in Oakland. He played with the marbles acquired by his father as well as accumulating marbles of his own. These marbles were considered "fancies" because of the elaborate colors and designs achieved by manipulating the variously colored glass rods or ribbons, and were more expensive than the more common "slags".
