Aftershock! Voices from the 1906 Earthquake and Fire. Great Hall, April 1 - August 13, 2006.

A whole section of the Bay Bridge collapsed during the Great Quake of October 17, 1989. It was closed for repairs for almost a month during which time commuter ferry service provided for the cross Bay transportation needs of residents. While there are always pedestrian lanes for bridge walkers on the Golden Gate Bridge, no pedestrian or bicycle traffic is normally allowed on the Bay Bridge. For the celebration of the reopening of the Bay Bridge however, the entire bridge was opened to walkers who purchased tickets at $5.00 each, the money going to local relief agencies to help earthquake survivors. This occurredon November 16, 1989.
