Bibliography: The Beginnings of Oakland, California A.U.C. by Peter Thomas Conmy; Oakland Public Library, 1961 Dr. Samuel Merritt, one of the greatest men in the development of Oakland, was born in Harpswill, Cumberland County, Maine, on March 30, 1822. He entered Bowdoin College at age eighteen and graduated a doctor of medicine when he was twenty-two. He emigrated to San Francisco in 1850 and practiced medicine for a few years. In 1857 he moved to Oakland where he engaged in business. Dr. Merritt was one of the early mayors of the city, serving 1868-1869. He never married. He died in Oakland on August 17, 1890.
