William Edward Dargie was born in San Francisco on March 13, 1854. He was educated in his native city and became a printer. He worked for the San Francisco Bulletin. In 1875, determined to secure a college education, he entered the University of California. At the close of one year he purchased a controlling interest in the Oakland Tribune and became editor July 24, 1876. He was a staunch Republican and supported that party editorially. On February 27, 1883 he began a four-year term as Postmaster in Oakland. On December 15, 1881 he married Erminia Peralta, daughter of Miguel Peralta. Dargie died in Oakland on February 2, 1934.
