Dunham, Carrigan & Co. San Francisco, Cal.

This oil or kerosene fueled lantern which was originally manufactured for use as a railroad headlamp was used by hardware merchants Dunham, Carrigan & Co., San Francisco as a sign for their store on Beale and Main Streets. It was lit at night when the store was open for business. The lantern has a wood base added in order to hang it from the front of the store. It is very elaborately stripped in red and gold and has ornate gold designs.
