H92.22.67

The donor is Erwin Strohmaier, a long time history docent and history guild member. The collection includes artifacts and photographs relating to the Gernhardt-Strohmaier Co., a stove business begun by his father in San Francisco in 1912 and open until 1960, where he worked as a young man. Two additional stores were opened in Oakland, one at 1611 Clay Street, from 1923 to 1933 and 1939 to 1960, and a second, temporary location at 1714 Telegraph Avenue, from 1933 to 1939. Erwin eventually became the manager of the Oakland store. He has written a history of the business which is in the donor file. The store at 1714 Telegraph Avenue which went through to Broadway at 1715 was leased from 1933 to 1939. Gernhardt-Strohmaier moved to this location temporarily after they lost the lease to their first Oakland location at 1611 Clay Street which they founded in 1923. In 1939 they purchased the Clay Street property and moved their store back to that location until 1960 when both the San Francisco and Oakland stores ceased business. See donor file for more history of Gernhardt-Stromaier Co. written by donor.
