Wildwood Stables, Oakland

This shirt was worn by the donor (Elaine Scholl Ingle) or her mother (Helen Haag Scholl) when they rode for Wildwood Stables in Oakland, in the official parade to celebrate the opening of the Oakland San Francisco Bay Bridge in 1937. Wildwood Stables, owned by Ben and Margaret Jones, was located on 35th Avenue below Skyline Blvd. ("JB" was the Ben Jones brand.) Elaine was a student at the time, and wore her shirt to Oakland Technical High School because all of the Bay Area communities encouraged "western dress" to celebrate the opening of the Bay Bridge, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Golden Gate International Exposition on Treasure Island. Her mother, Helen, was a pharmacist at the Owl Drug Store at 14th and Washington. Elaine rode a salt and pepper ("flee-bitten" gray) horse trained to do bull-doging; his name was Eagle and he lived to be 32 years old. Helen rode a large horse (17 hands high), a bay with white stockings and a white blaze; he was named Prince. This shirt has no pockets and is not piped.
