After the 1906 earthquake and fire, most of San Francisco's Chinese residents fled to Oakland, where they stayed with relatives or friends, and at a private refugee camp set up at the Pacific Coast Canning Company. The cannery owner, Lew Hing, provided food, clothing, and medical assistance to the Chinese refugees while permanent assistance was arranged.
