For a detailed summary of the prosecution's arguments, please see the "Remarks" screen for h96.1.1436. First day of the trial of Burton W. Abbott, accused of the kidnapping and murder of 14 year-old Stephanie Bryan. From Nov. 7 until Nov. 15, the trial was occupied with selection of the jury. This photograph, printed in the November 7, 1955, Oakland Tribune, shows a large group of hopeful spectators massing outside of the courtroom where the Abbott trial will take place. The caption for this photograph reads: "Several hundred Abbott trial spectators had gather outside the fifth-floor courtroom in the Courthouse by 8:30 am. No spectators, other than Abbotts mother, wife and brother were admitted. The large crowd was present despite warnings published in newspapers that there would be no seats for spectators until the jury has been finally selected. Some of those present said they arrived at the courthouse as early as 7 am."
