Photograph of Mary Bryan, the mother of Abbott victim Stephanie Bryan. She is sitting in conference with District Attorney J. Frank Coakley. When this photograph was printed in the November 22, 1955, Oakland Tribune, the paper also ran a story about "Mrs. Bryan Due To Face Abbott." For the first time in court, on Nov. 23, Mr. and Mrs. Bryan saw Burton Abbott in person. The Tribune reported: "Mrs. Mary Bryan dreads facing her own trial -- her first sight of the man accused of murdering her child. "It's a dread she felt in the `pit of my stomach' as she waited all yesterday afternoon and throught this morning to take the witness stand. ... "Although dignified and composed, as she has been since the disappearance and death of her 14-year-old daughter, Stephanie, Mrs. Bryan admits she is inwardly uneasy at the thought of seeing Abbott.
