Photograph shows the biplane the "Miss Doran" on an airfield. Handwritten on the back in pencil "don't know man on left-[in black ink]-is Navy chief Manley Lawing-[in pencil] man on right Augie Pedlar pilot of plane 'Miss Doran.' He lost in crash that killed Miss Doran. [in black ink] this is accident at Mendota as they enroute Long Beach-Oakland for start of race." Photo shows Pedlar on the right, wearing a plaid jacket, straw hat, patterned knickers, patterned knee socks and shoes, a cigarette clutched in his right hand. He is leaning over a tire, presumably from the plane which is behind him. He is holding the tire steady with the man on the left, Manley Lawing, who is wearing a Navy uniform. His hat is pushed back on his head and he is looking at Pedlar. [I have not found in any of my research, that Lawing was in the Navy but Knope definately was a lieutenant in the US Navy, DMC 6-19-96.] See H96.1.1864 for information on the Dole Race and the "Miss Doran."
