First Flyers at Oakland Airport. June 7 through October 10, 2002 (copy of object)

Clipping on the back from the Tribune, November 11, 1945-"This is the plane Miss Doran surrounded by crowds a short time before the flight's start at Oakland Airport. The plane is believed to have gone down about half-way of its goal." Another clipping from Tribune, August 11, 1957-"The Miss Doran surrounded by crowds a short time before the flight got under way." Photo shows three of the planes from the Dole Race parked side-by-side near a fence by the parking lot. The first plane is the "Miss Doran," the second probably the "Oaklahoma," and the third appears to be the "Golden Eagle." A moderate crowd of men, women, and children are surrounding the planes, checking them out. The "Golden Eagle" is parked near one of the only buildings at the Oakland Airport at the time which was a wood shack for the restaurant. A wood fence separates the airfield from the parking lot. A bicycle is leaning up against the fence and lots of cars are parked behind the fence on the left side of the photo. See H96.1.1864 for information regarding the Dole Race and on the "Miss Doran."
