Handwritten on the back, "Robert Fowler with flag." Clipping in Tribune, Aug. 28, 1961-- "AWAY THEY GO-- Robert G. (Bob) Fowler of San Jose, who made the first West-to-East transcontinental flight, drops the flag to start a race between two Kreider-Reisner biplanes. The venerble craft left Metropolitan Oakland International Airport Saturday, and expected to be 10 days en route to Long Island. Sponsored by the Silver Wings, an organization of pilots who soloed at least 25 years ago, the race is in commemoration of Fowler's 46-day flight in 1911." Photo shows the two biplanes parked side by side on the runway. A man, Fowler, holding a checkered flag is standing by the second plane.
