Clipping on the back, June 6, 1944-- "A dozen furry Chow puppies provided the incentive for a display of patriotic generosity at Moore Dry Dock yesterday, when hundreds of workers gathered at the entrance gate to bid for the animals, with proceeds donated to the purchase of musical instruments for sailors at the Naval Hospital at Shoemaker. Oscar Chilgren (at microphone) was auctioneer." Photo shows a crowd of people gathered around a small platform decorated with signs about supporting the war effort, etc. In front of the platform is a man wearing a suit and holding up a puppy as he yells. The crowd is made up of workers wearing work clothes (overalls, etc) and hardhats and the women are wearing bandanas over their hair. The crowd is very diverse, men and women of all ages, both Causasian and African American.
