Royal Winton, Grimwades, Made in England

The cups and saucers in this collection come from Della's Tea Cup Cafe, 7309 MacArthur Boulevard, Oakland, which was established in February, 1967. The cafe is noted for, and decorated with, a very large collection of tea cups. Some of the cups were purchased by the owner, others were presented to her as gifts, while still others were made for her. A: cup is of porcelain glazed with three colors graduating into each other:purple, red, and yellow, with the yellow closest to the lip. The interior is in off-white; all has a lustrous or iridescent appearance. The lip is edged with metallic gold. The handle is shaped with two nearly 90 degree angles so that it resembles a rectangle. The bottom has a manufacturer's mark in dark green: "Royal Winston, Grimwades, Made in England" and a number in gold: "11." B: saucer resembles the cup in material, color, and lustrous finish. Its base is glazed in plain off-white and is marked with a Royal winston mark identical to that on the cup. The donor remarked about this cup: " I always liked the color of this one. The color is really outstanding... This color is what impressed me. It has three or four colors. It really did take some doing. I wonder how they do that. One of these days, I want to paint and see what kind of color I could get up."
