This quilt block was entered in the "School Quilt Block Competition, 1998, co-sponsored by P & B Textiles and the Oakland Museum of California. Students had to incorporate into their quilt block three pieces of P & B textiles (provided to them through the competition kit) which had been developed from 19th century fabrics in the collections of the Oakland Museum of California. An exhibition "Fabrications" was held at the museum from May 16 - July 5, 1998. This was the 1st prize winning quilt block for grades 6-8. It was made by Lauren Tom and Ellie Lammer, 6th grade students at the Berkwood Hedge School, Berkeley, Lee Tempkin, teacher. The block is a variation on a nine patch with little kimonos machine embroidered appliqued to eight of the blocks. The center block has a crane appliqued on it. Four of the kimonos have red grossgrain ribbon straight across (representing the obi at the front of the kimono) and four of the kimonos have red bows tied (representing the obi at the back of the kimono). The P&B fabrics are used as borders and sashing.
