Wooden sign, black sand is sprinkled over a gold ground except where the letters of the sign show through in gold; the effect is gold letters on a black ground; wooden frame. "Dr. Ellinwood." Dr. Ellinwood came to California in, I think, the late 1840s. After doing some mining, he left to study medicine with Louis Pasteur in Paris. He then returned to California in about 1856 and set up his medical practice in Nevada City.
