William McKinley (1843-1901) was a Republican Congressman and Governor of Ohio who was elected President in 1896. Garret Hobart, a Senator from New Jersey was his Vice President. McKinley defeated William Jennings Bryan and campaigned for "sound money" against Bryan's free coinage of silver and gold. In 1900 McKinley again defeated Bryan but this time Theodore Roosevelt was his running mate. McKinley was assassinated in Buffalo in 1901 and Roosevelt became President.
